| Before You Start... |
 |
| The unit of measurement throughout this, and most ErgoDraw tutorials, is points. To modify your settings, choose Edit > Preferences from the menu bar.
Create a new RGB document in Landscape mode. All color values throughout the tutorial are in RGB mode.
This tutorial uses interface elements, commands and tools available in Illustrator CS. Users of versions prior to this may find names, appearances and locations have changed.
In an Intermediate or Advanced level tutorial, some assumptions about your knowledge of Illustrator are made. Therefore, you will not find as much detail in areas such as changing colors, adjusting gradients, using masks, or selecting objects. If you need help in these areas, please consult the Illustrator Help file. |

01 | Create and color
Select the Ellipse Tool and click once on the artboard to display the tool's options dialog box. Enter a value of 160 for both width and height and click OK.
Here is where you choose a color for your ballz. For the purpose of this tutorial, I'm using orange (R:255 G:153 B:0). There will be no stroke color so set this to none.
02 | Layer upon Layer
To get some logistics out of the way early, we will duplicate the current layer (complete with circle) three (3) times.
Choose Duplicate "Layer 1" from the Layers palette's option menu. If your default layer has a different name, it will be reflected in the menu command.
Select Layer 1 again (or the new layer), and repeat the duplicate command to make another layer. Do this one more time to create a third layer.
In descending order, name your layers to match those in the image below.
Hide both the GRADIENT and REFLECTION layer and select the COLOR layer.
03 | Adding Depth
Use the Selection Tool to select the circle, open the Transparency palette (Window > Transparency) and set the blending mode to Multiply. Leave the opacity level at 100%.
Lock this layer and select the DEPTH layer. Select the circle on this layer and set the fill color to white (R:255 G:255 B:255).
Next, choose Effect > Stylize > Inner Glow from the menu bar. In the dialog box that appears, adjust the settings and values to those shown in the image below. When done, click OK.
Notice I chose black for the color. You could change this to another color so long as it's a darker color than the one you chose for your circle on the COLOR layer. The intent is to add some dark shading to the edges of the circle.
Since the blending mode on the COLOR layer is set to Multiply, the Inner Glow effect on this layer is visible through it. The effect remains visible even if the circle on the COLOR layer is changed. Our work on this layer is done so lock it and continue on.
